Slum Dwellers Want Land Rights Bill Passed
By Decontee M. Wesseh

MONROVIA, September 13 (LINA) -The President of the Slum Dwellers Association of Liberia (SDAL), Bestman Toe, has called on the 53rd National Legislature to pass the Land Rights Bill to develop the slums and improve the livelihood of its inhabitants.

The Land Rights Bill, which has been at the Legislature since 2014, seeks to establish authentic procedures and well-organized processes for land acquisition, use, management and administration in Liberia, among others.

The SDAL president told reporters in the Monrovia suburb of Jallah Town Monday that “government is doing well, but it is yet to impact those living in the slum communities.”

Toe pointed out that the lives of slum dwellers are not progressing as a result of poor housing and infrastructure, noting that they are lagging behind in terms of some basic social needs, including latrines and safe drinking water.

“Our markets, lands and housing units are in informal settlements, and policy must be implemented so that people living in the slums can be confident that this country belongs to them also,” he pointed out.

Toe indicated that the passage of the bill will also afford slum dwellers the opportunity to acquire land and develop it to better their lives.
