Pres. Sirleaf Reinstates Suspended Defense Officials

MONROVIA, March 17 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has reinstated with immediate effect Mr. Joseph F. Johnson, Deputy Minister of National Defense for Administration, and instructed Defense Minister Brownie J. Samukai, to likewise reinstate Defense Ministry Comptroller Nyumah Dorkor.

According to a Defense Ministry press release, the President took the action on Friday, March 14.

It can be recalled that on Friday, December 20, 2013, the President suspended Deputy Minister Johnson for time indefinite, pending investigation and instructed the Minister of Defense to suspend the Ministry’s Comptroller on allegation of a “fraudulent transaction in petroleum products” involving some officials of the Ministries of National Defense and Finance, and the Don Kan Gas Station.

The Defense Minister has complied with the directive of President Sirleaf and reinstated the ministry's Comptroller Dorkor, and ordered him to report to work effective Tuesday, March 18.

The Ministry of National Defense has at the same time welcomed the findings of the investigation by the panel which exonerated the two officials based on the lack of evidence.

The Ministry has accordingly welcomed Deputy Minister Johnson and Comptroller Dorkor back to their respective duties.

Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry has assured its continued commitment to accountability and transparency in all of its transactions, saying it will not condone anything to the contrary in the execution of its duties.
