LTA Warns Cellcom, Lonestar Against Retaliatory Action

MONROVIA, September 10 (LINA) - The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has warned the managements of Cellcom Telecommunications Inc., and Lonestar Cell MTN against any retaliatory action that could have national security implications.

The LTA warning was contained in a press release issued recently against the backdrop of a letter of complaint from Cellcom recently alleging that Lonestar Cell MTN was violating the LTA interconnection regulations, among other things.

According to the release, Cellcom alleged that Novafone, which was recently acquired by LonestarCell MTN, sent out promotional texts to Lonestar Cell MTN customers, announcing four days free calls for US$1.00.

The release noted that Cellcom also claimed that promotional texts were also sent to their patrons from the Lonestar Cell message center indicating that Lonestar Cell made a similar allegation against Cellcom earlier this year.

According to the release, Cellcom is calling on the LTA to intervene immediately or it (Cellcom) would be compelled to shut down its interconnection trunks with Lonestar Cell MTN and Novafone.

In the release, LTA indicated that it takes very seriously any threat to disrupt the telecommunication sector, and has also issued a warning against any vengeful action that could eventually have national security implications.

According to the release, the LTA has requested both companies to provide their evidences, or refute the claims against them.

Meanwhile, LTA has called on all third parties that might be involved in SMS schemes to desist from such act.
