Pres. Sirleaf Grants Clemency To 9 Convicts In 6 Counties
By Derrick G, Menkarzon

MONROVIA, September 6 (LINA) – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has granted executive clemency to nine convicts detained in correction facilities in six counties, Justice Minister Fredrick Cherue has said.

Those to be released are Mark Sackor, J. Sor and Robertson Doe, Sinoe County Correction Facility; Abraham Sayon and Abdu Kadii, Bong County Correction Facility; Duawa Jallah, Gbarpolu County; Comfort Turay, Lofa County; John S. Tarbeh, Grand Gedeh County and Mamie Jawee, Montserrado County.

Addressing the Ministry of Information press briefing Tuesday, Cherue said most of the prisoners were convicted of committing crimes ranging from aggravated assault to robbery.

According to the Justice Minister, their clemency was the result of a recommendation by the Justice Ministry for their rehabilitation based on their conduct and good behavior while serving their prison terms.

He added that the Ministry will send letters to the counties concerned to let them go free.

Cherue noted that prisons are intended for convicts to right wrongs while serving their sentences “and not to keep them there for the longest or until death.”
