Justice Minister Says Security Forces Ready To Protect State

GBARNGA, September 5 (LINA) - Justice Minister Fredrick Cherue is confident of the full readiness of the Liberian security forces to take over the protection of the country following the withdrawal of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

Minister Cherue said this is indicative by the many successful security operations conducted by the Liberia National Police and other security agencies in the country.

He cited the restoration of order in Nimba during the violent demonstration against Arcelor Mittal and the Ganta riot that led to the burning of a hotel as some of the security situations that Liberian security forces have successfully handled.

Cherue said the government assumed full security responsibility of the country three years ago and that UNMIL was just playing a monitoring role.

Justice Minister Cherue was speaking at the weekend in Gbarnga, Bong County following a tour of the Gbarnga Regional Security Hub and the Central Prison.

Minister Cherue along with Chief Justice Francis Korkpor and an array of judicial actors over the weekend also visited prison facilities in Bong and Margibi counties.

Minister Cherue noted that the tour was part of efforts by the ministry to assess the conditions of prisons and court facilities in the two counties for possible interventions.

He told reporters that the Gbarnga Central Prison was overcrowded and that discussions were ongoing with Chief Justice Korkpor to ensure that justice actors and judicial officials in Bong County fast-track the process of addressing the plight of prolonged pre-trial detentions at the Gbarnga Central Prison.
