Govt. Committed To Int’l Health Regulations - Dahn

MONROVIA, September 5 (LINA) - The Liberian Government has demonstrated its commitment to implementing the International Health Regulations (IHR), Health Minister Bernice Dahn has said.
Dahn said this was realized through the development and implementation of integrated avian and human influenza plan, as a result of the H5N1 Avian Influenza Pandemic, bringing together the Ministries of Agriculture, Internal
Affairs, Health and Finance.
The Health Minister made the statement Monday at a local hotel in Monrovia at the start of a one-week assessment on the implementation status of the IHR.
When implemented, Dahn said, the IHR will serve as an important instrument in assessing the capacity of a nation to prevent, protect, control and provide public health response to international spread of diseases.
Dahn disclosed that government has developed a national pandemic plan and conducted training for rapid response teams with support from the U.S Government.
She noted that Liberia also developed and implemented a national investment plan, taking into account lessons learned from the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak, restoration of health services, and public health security.
According to Dahn, the national investment plan places more emphasis on prevention, detection, preparedness, and response to public threats and events by not only strengthening the health system, but also engaging the community.
The Health Minister said as part of initiatives and efforts aimed at implementing the IHR, government is strengthening surveillance, including laboratory system, preparedness and response, and health information management.
She disclosed that government has advanced human resource development through the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) within and outside the country.
According to her, government has advanced initiatives to establish Liberia’s public health institute to strengthen public health functions, among others.
