UN Official To Speak On Strategic Assessment Mission To Liberia 

MONROVIA, September 5 (LINA)- Visiting U. N. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr. El Ghassim Wane, will Thursday brief journalists on the visit to Liberia of the Strategic Assessment Mission from the U.N. Headquarters in New York.  

The assessment mission arrived in the country August 29 to advance recommendations on the withdrawal of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

The recommendations, among other things, will also seek to transition to a future United Nations presence that would assist the Liberian Government consolidate the peace, considering security conditions on the ground and Liberia’s overall capacity to ensure security and stability following the conclusion of the security transition.

According to a release issued in Monrovia on Monday, the mission is pursuant to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2239 adopted in 2015.

While in the country, the mission’s advance team will from August 29 to September 3 hold consultations with officials of the government and other relevant stakeholders, international and regional partners, UNMIL personnel and the United Nations country team.

Assistant Secretary-General Wane, who arrived in the country September 4, will on September 7 hold discussions with media executives to ascertain progress to date as well as challenges.

Plans are underway for a possible withdrawal of UNMIL in preference for a future United Nations presence in Liberia to assist government in consolidating peace in the country, taking into account conditions on the ground, the release added.

The team is expected to conclude its assessment mission on September 8.
