‘Decision To Recuse Myself Not Sign Of Weakness’ - Tyler
By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, September 1(LINA) - House Speaker Alex Tyler has said that the decision to recuse himself from presiding over the House of Representatives should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness.

Tyler also said his earlier position to remain as Speaker of the House was not a desire to hold on to the position at the detriment of the state, but was geared towards ensuring that Liberia does not conform to actions that are unconstitutional, illegal and undemocratic.

Tyler, on the first day sitting of the extra-ordinary session of the 53rd Legislature on Thursday, held a press conference at the Capitol Building where he announced his recusal from presiding over the House amidst the lingering leadership crisis which stalled legislative functions.

"The crisis in the Legislature is polarizing the state in almost every sphere of our national existence. The House is divided. If this impasse is not resolved, the First Branch of government may be unable to perform its duties, this would mean a partial collapse of the structure of the state," Tyler said.

Tyler said as he and other members of the House of Representatives pursue the prime objective to serve the nation they will do nothing to undermine the fundamental tenets of Liberia's democracy.

He thinks that it would have been “a matter of foolish pride” were he and other lawmakers in the ongoing leadership battle to have sat idly and seen the nation and institutions of governance disintegrate into chaos.

According to Tyler, there are no winners in the ongoing leadership fray, especially when the nation's pride is at stake.

Tyler opined that any attempt to further tread the path of the prevailing crisis, members of the House could end their tenures leaving the country more divided than when some of them assumed the mantle of leadership in 2006.
