Speaker Tyler Recuses Himself From Presiding Over Plenary
By Wilfred S. Gortor

MONROVIA, September 1 (LINA) – The two-month leadership crisis at the House of Representatives ended Thursday with Speaker Alex Tyler finally bowing to pressure to recuse himself from presiding over Plenary.

Tyler told a press conference that he stepped aside in the interest of the nation.

“The interest of the people remains supreme and as such I cannot continue to hold back the work of the National Legislature,” Tyler said.

He has been under pressure from a majority bloc of the House to recuse himself from presiding over session owing to his indictment on criminal charges by the Grand Jury of Montserrado County.

The Grand Jury indicted Tyler for his alleged involvement in a bribery scandal unveiled by Global Witness in a report in May this year.

The report alleged that Tyler and other present and past government officials received bribes in the tone of US$950.000 from Sable Mining, a UK-based mining Company, to change a portion of the public concession law to gain access to the iron ore-rich Wologizi Mountain in north-western Liberia.

When contacted for an interpretation of the matter, Constitutional Lawyer Tiawon Gongloe said Tyler remains Speaker of the House except that he will not perform the duties ascribed to the office.

Also, when contacted, Presidential Press Secretary Jerolinmek Matthew Piah said the Executive Mansion had no comment on the matter.

All efforts to contact Mr. Nimene Bartekwa, the leader of the majority bloc which pressured Tyler to recuse himself, proved futile.
