Gov’t Not Against Press Freedom - Jackson Clarifies
By Derrick Menkarzon & Jeraldine Gbaa

MONROVIA, August 30 (LINA) –The Government of Liberia is not against press freedom, but against the “reckless disregard of the rules and procedures governing this country,” Deputy Information Minister Isaac Jackson has said.

Deputy Minister Jackson made statement Monday in reaction to a pronouncement by the Vice President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Jallah Grayfield, demanding that government reopens Voice FM 102.7 and LIB-24 which were closed early this month due to non-payment of taxes.

Grayfield told a local radio talk show via mobile phone Monday that the PUL is open to dialogue with government in order to resolve the situation that led to the shutting down of the media institutions.

He claimed that government is casting a blind eye on a lot of institutions and entities that are operating illegally in the country, but only acts on media establishments that are simply critical of its policies.

But, Jackson refuted Grayfield’s claims, noting that government has established an indisputable record of promoting press freedom and free speech in the country.

He added: “Government has donated a hundred thousand dollars to the PUL in support of smooth media operation and development in the country.”

Jackson emphasized that even though government respects the media in the exercise of its freedom, it will not relent in clamping down on those who are not obeying the laws of the country.
