Judge Wants President Replace Judges

By Chris Nyenapee, LINA Grand Gedeh County Correspondent

ZWEDRU, March15 (LINA) - The Presiding Judge of the 7th Judicial Circuit Court in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, S. Geevon Smith, has called on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to appoint magistrates and judges to fill vacancies in the courts of the county.

Six magistrates of the Grand Gedeh Judicial System were in July 2013 retired, while two others including the Debt Court Judge Joseph K. Norman died.

They are yet to be replaced, thus leaving the judicial system paralyzed, Judge Smith told the Liberian News Agency in an interview in Zwedru Friday.

Meanwhile, Judge Smith has disclosed that the court continues to try cases under the old jury law because the new jury law is “ambiguous”.

He explained that the court had to select jurors under the old system, because a jury manager, under the new jury law, is yet to be appointed at the 7th Judicial Circuit Court.

At the same time, Judge Smith has further disclosed that the cases of pre-trial detainees at the Palace of Corrections are to be reviewed, to ensure that people under detention are protected under the statutory laws of detention.
