Flag Day Orator Recommends Citizenship For Non-Negroes
By Prince S. Nagbe

MONROVIA, August 24 (LINA) – The 169th Flag Day Orator, Rev. Emmanuel Bowier, has called on government to amend Article 27 of the Liberian Constitution to allow whites become citizens of the country.

Article 27 (b) of the Constitution provides that only Negroes or persons of Negro descent shall be qualified by birth or by naturalization to be citizens of Liberia.

Delivering his oration at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion in Monrovia on Wednesday, Rev. Bowier said that portion of the Constitution was actually proffered by the indigenes for fear that they were going to be colonized and not by the pioneers as has been perceived.

He called on Liberians to think very strategically by allowing whites to become citizens of Liberia because they will help strengthen the country’s development agenda.

Bowier added that allowing people of non-negro descent to become citizens of Liberia will also minimize the sale of strategic land to people who will not develop them for fear that they will leave behind their investments in the future since they are not Liberian citizens.
“We leave our villages and towns and travel to the white man’s home and crave to be citizens of those countries, but we are refusing to allow them become citizens in our home. I think that is being selfish,” Bowier stressed.

Meanwhile, Rev. Bowier has said those calling for the Christianization of Liberia are doing so out of prejudice and this must stop.

“We have to think straight. Muslims existed in Liberia 100 years before Christianity arrived in the country, so to make Liberia a Christian State is to breed conflict and segregation,” Bowier emphasized.
