By Calvin Brooks
MONROVIA, August 24 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called on Liberians to unite around the National Flag so that the nation can continue to develop and build a prosperous and tolerant society.
President Sirleaf said the National Flag should be seen as a symbol of peace, strength and unity as the nation endeavors to achieve its development goals.
The Liberian leader made the remarks Wednesday at programs marking the observance of the 169th anniversary of National Flag Day of Liberia.
The program, which was held at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street in Monrovia, brought together several officials of
government, students, well-wishers and members of the religious community, among others.
Former Information Minister Rev. Emmanuel Bowier served as the orator for this year's Flag Day program which is commemorated on August 24 each year.
President Sirleaf said Liberians should disabuse their minds of division and pettiness, noting that Liberians have to come together to reflect on the qualities of patriotism and self-discipline as they observe the 169th anniversary of the national ensign.
She said to be a patriot means one should love his or her country and that patriotism requires a measure of honesty to properly evaluate the state.
