MICAT Open To Dialogue With PUL On Media Issues

By Stephen N. Sonpon

MONROVIA, August 23 (LINA) - The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) says it is open to dialogue with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) to enhance the media landscape in the country.

Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe said the discussion will center on issues affecting media institutions and adherence to the PUL own ethical and professional guidelines and code of ethics.

Minister Nagbe’s comments come a day after the PUL, in a meeting with media executives at its headquarters Monday, expressed readiness to dialogue with the government concerning tax payment by media institutions and enforcement of regulations.

“If the government is sincere about ensuring compliance with the laws and regulations, the Press Union is available to join this conversation,” PUL President Kamara A. Kamara said Monday.

Information Minister Nagbe, who made the statement Tuesday via mobile phone on a local radio talk show in Monrovia, noted that the PUL has media guidelines that are objective, but require media outfits to put into practice.

He stated that the government is going to reach out to the PUL as it has been doing in the past to discuss issues hampering the operations of media institutions in the country.
