Traditional Council Calls For Tyler’s Recusal
By Prince S. Nagbe

MONROVIA, August 23 (LINA) – The National Traditional Council of Liberia has called on House Speaker Alex Tyler to recuse himself from presiding over the plenary to answer to corruption charges levied against him by the Grand Jury of Montserrado County.

The Council’s decision was a result of Speaker Tyler’s refusal to attend a meeting called by the Council aimed at settling ongoing internal wrangling between Tyler and those calling for his recusal from presiding over sessions.

The head of the Council, Chief Zanzan Karwar, said the decision by the Council has been endorsed by the traditional chiefs from the 15 counties.

Chief Karwar noted that the act carried out by the Speaker was disrespectful to the traditional leaders and demonstrates his unwillingness to settle the dispute currently taking place at the National Legislature, especially the lower House.

Since his indictment by the Grand Jury of Montserrado County on charges of Criminal Facilitation, Economic Sabotage, Criminal Solicitation and Bribery among others, some members of the House of Representatives led by Deputy Speaker Hans Barchue have been calling on Speaker Tyler to recuse himself from presiding over session to answer to the charges levied against him.

According to the indictment, Speaker Tyler requested and received US$75,000 to amend the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) law in favor of Sable Mining, a UK-based Mining Company, to enable it take over mining activities at Mt. Wologizi in Lofa County.
