UN Official Urges Increased Budget For Gender Ministry
By: Derrick G. Menkarzon

MONROVIA, August 20 (LINA) - The Special Representative of the U.N Secretary General (SRSG) in Liberia has called for adequate budgetary allotment to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

Mr. Farid Zarif noted that a budget commensurate with the responsibility of the ministry will go a long way in meeting the mandate of the institution.

Zarif stated that the current allotment to the ministry in the budget is insufficient, considering its oversight responsibility to the entire population.

The UN SRSG made the call when he paid a visit to the Ministry this week during which he lauded the minister and staff for their commitment and dedication to advancing the mandate for which it was established.

He encouraged the ministry to continue its work with the limited financial resources at its disposal until at such time when more appropriations are provided in the national budget.

During the visit, Mr. Zarif planted a tree in the ministry's yard.

In remarks, Gender Minister Julia Duncan-Cassell expressed delight at the UN official’s visit and assured that the ministry will continue to carry out its functions with the available resources.

The Gender minister described Zarif’s planting of a tree in the ministry’s yard as symbol of “life” at the ministry.
