Nagbe Urges Media To Use Freedom In Ethical Manner

By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA August 20 (LINA) - Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe has called on the media to utilize the free media space given by government in an ethical and civilized manner, independent of political manipulations.

The Information minister was speaking when he appeared before members of the House of Representatives in the Joint Chamber of the Capitol Building Thursday to provide clarity on the closure of the Sarafina Ventures and Communications Inc. by the Civil Law Court recently.

According to Nagbe, the free media space is well-intended, cautioning the press not to be contaminated or diluted by some political actors who are now utilizing some media outlets to propagate and foster diabolical agendas against the nation.

He cautioned the media against unethical reportage and publications that have the propensity to derail the peace that Liberians have enjoyed over the years.

Nagbe indicated that there exists a free and vibrant press in Liberia, noting that the government remains committed to maintaining a media landscape that is free of interference.

But, he added, “Government will not allow a media broadcast that is intended to incite the public and undermine the democratic process of Liberia.”

Meanwhile, Deputy House Speaker Hans Barchue has said that the country’s security is fragile and as such the media must desist from disseminating hate messages so that the nation can remain on the path of peace.

Barchue said it has been recorded in history that as the result of incitement by media broadcast, Rwanda experienced a brutal genocide that claimed over 500,000 lives.
