50 Liberian Youths Train In Social, Athletic Disciplines
By Steven N. Sonpon
MONROVIA, August 18 (LINA) –The Messengers of Peace (MOP) Liberia, a non-governmental organization in Monrovia, has trained over 50 Liberian youths in various social and athletic disciplines.
The youth were trained during a month-long peace summer camp held in Montserrado County.
The training, which ran from July 17 to August 17, focused on basketball, conflict resolution, public speaking and volunteerism.
Speaking Wednesday during the closing program held at the Ministry of Information, MOP Executive Director Gwendolyn Myers said the training marked the official closing of the 2016 Summer Camp.
The Summer Camp brought together young people aged eight to18 years from diverse educational backgrounds and communities in Monrovia and its environs.
According to Myers, the training provided the youngsters the opportunity to be responsible, non-violent and friendly, as well as to acquire the skill of learning different languages such as French and Spanish.
She indicated that the one-month summer camp prepared the young people in understanding conflict resolution and the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) #2250.
Resolution 2250 urges member states to consider ways to give youth a greater voice in decision-making at the local, national, regional and international levels.
MOP is a non-governmental, not-for-profit youth organization which originated from community outreach of the Public Information Office of the United Nations in Liberia in September 2008.
