Peace Envoy Urges Media To Nurture Peace In Liberia

By Calvin Brooks

MONROVIA, August 17 (LINA) - The National Peace Ambassador has challenged Liberian journalists to foster peace and reconciliation through their daily reportage of events in the country.

Ambassador William Tolbert, III stated that the media has a major role to play in the process of maintaining and sustaining peace in Liberia as the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) draws down.

Ambassador Tolbert made the statement Wednesday at the start of a two-day consultation with media practitioners held at the Carter Center Conference Hall on Third Street in Sinkor, Monrovia.

He noted that the media is a powerful component in the peace-building process of a nation, noting that the media has the force to sustain and enhance the peace process.

Tolbert explained that the media has the power to escalate and to calm situations and that that power should be used to strengthen Liberia’s peace-building agenda.

Ambassador Tolbert emphasized that maintaining and sustaining peace is not just for the general and presidential elections in 2017, but to ensure that Liberia remains stable even after the elections.

The two-day consultation, which is being held under the theme: “Enhancing the capacity of media practitioners to sustain the peace in Liberia,” was organized by the Office of the National Peace Ambassador of Liberia in collaboration with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL).

It gathered media practitioners from across Liberia.
