Senate Committee To Mediate In House Crisis

By Wilfred Gortor

MONROVIA, August 16 (LINA) - The Liberian Senate has constituted a six-member committee to intervene and resolve the ongoing crisis among members of the House of Representatives.

The crisis is centered on a resolution of a splinter group of the lower House crafted Thursday, August 11, declaring House Speaker Alex Tyler “recused” from the position and presiding over plenary.

The committee, headed by Senate Pro-Tempore Armah Jallah, was constituted following an Executive Session by the Liberian Senate on Tuesday.

Other members of the committee are Montserrado Senator Geraldine Sheriff, Bong County Senator Henry Yallah, Grand Kru Senator Peter Coleman, Sinoe County Senator Joseph Nagbe and Senator Stephen Zargo of Lofa County.

In a statement read by Jallah, the committee is mandated to play a mediatory role by constructively engaging the parties involved in the crisis and proffering a resolution for a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Since the eruption of the wrangling at the House of Representatives, this is the first time that the leadership of the Liberian Senate has made an official comment on the matter.

Jallah said it is the hope of the Senate that all parties involved in the conflict will accept its mediatory role.

"The committee is expected to report to the Senate plenary in the shortest possible time," he added.
