Armed Robbers Attack Presidential Task Force Offices

MONROVIA, August 12 (LINA) - Eight men, armed with single barrel guns and other deadly weapons,  Friday morning attacked the Headquarters of the Special Presidential Task Force in Monrovia, leaving a private security guard with minor injuries.

The Task Force said in a release that the armed men, dressed in black outfits, broke into the main entrance of the building in an attempt to gain access, but were met with strong resistance from the security guards on duty.

It will be recalled that President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf constituted the Task Force in May, naming Cllr. Fonati Koffa as Chairman to investigate a UK-based Global Witness report in which several past and present government officials were linked to a US$950,000 bribery scandal.

The Task Force, through the Criminal Court “C” at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia, indicted House Speaker J. Alex Tyler, Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney Sherman, former Deputy Lands, Mines and Energy Minister E.C.B Jones, former National Investment Commission Chairman Richard Tolbert and Willie Belleh, former Chairman of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission, among others.

The release said the safe containing all evidences compiled against those indicted and situated in the building “was not breached as everything remains intact at the Task Force.”

Meanwhile, the Liberia National Police (LNP) has launched a forensic probe into the matter, according to the statement.
