MICAT Begins Renovation Of  National Museum
By Robert Dixon

MONROVIA,  August 9 (LINA) - The Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism  (MICAT) has embarked on the renovation of the National Museum on Broad Street in Monrovia.

The National Museum of Liberia was established by an Act of Legislature in 1958 during the administration of Liberia's 18th President William V.S. Tubman.

The Museum is currently housed in the country’s first Executive Mansion (State House).

At the initial stage of its establishment, the Museum was funded by the U. N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the then Department of Public Instruction, now known as the Ministry of Education.

The Museum was established to primarily obtain, preserve and display cultural artifacts and other historical items which depict the country's heritage.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency Tuesday, Assistant Minister for Culture, Louise W. McMillan, put the cost of the entire renovation works at over US$339,000.

According to Minister McMillian, the construction is being undertaken by the Liberia Reconstruction Development Company.

McMillian said the ongoing renovation contract which was entered into on April 30 will last longer due to the fact that a portion of the museum collapsed following the signing of the construction contract.
