MOE Vows Punitive Action For Early Graduation

By Derrick G, Menkarzon

MONROVIA, August 5 (LINA) – The Ministry of Education has vowed to take punitive action against administrators who violate its instruction that schools wait for the results of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) tests before graduating students.

Deputy Education Minister Romelle Horton gave the warning against the backdrop that a number of schools have already held graduation exercises recently under the guise of “thanksgiving services” prior to the release of the WAEC results.

Speaking the Ministry of Information press briefing Thursday, Horton said the MOE will institute punitive actions ranging from sanctions and other measures she did not readily disclose.

It can be recalled that the Ministry of Education (MOE) in June 2016 informed schools authorities that there will be no graduation program until the WAEC exams results were officially released.

Horton has, however, observed that this policy has been violated by some schools which she did not name.

She indicated that in order for Liberia's educational system to move forward, the needs of student must be met, and that parents must play a major role in their children’s education to make them better.

She advised that parents keep their children under watch, especially when they return from school to help minimize the mass failure in the educational system.

Of the 46,613 senior high candidates who sat the 2016 WAEC Exams, 22,671 failed the test, while 16,072 passed and 7,870 results are withheld for collusion and exam irregularities.
