CSOs Soliciting 2,000 Signatures For Land Rights Bill
By S. Kannay Ziamo, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, August 4 (LINA) – A grouping of civil society organizations is soliciting over 2,000 signatures from citizens of Nimba County to submit to the National Legislature in support of the passage of the Draft Land Rights Act into law.

An official of the Civil Society Organizations Working Group on Land Rights, Betty K. Sharpe, made the disclosure at a one-day awareness meeting with a cross-section of Nimba citizens in Ganta, Nimba County recently.

The meeting discussed the draft document that was submitted to the Lower House by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in 2014.

Sharpe pointed out that the lawmakers are yet to act on the instrument for onward submission to the Senate for concurrence, emphasizing the need for that august body to pass the bill into law before their agriculture break in September.

She opined that if the bill is ignored, it could jeopardize the peace and security of the country because, as she puts it, “I doubt it will be done after their break as many of the lawmakers will be focusing on running their campaigns for the coming elections.”

She added: “Many Liberians are not satisfied with the way land issues are currently handled across the country.”

Sharpe noted that it is disheartening that communities continue to be vulnerable to land-grabbing and large-scale land acquisitions, while the Land Rights Act is languishing at the Capitol Building.

The Civil Society Organizations Working Group is a conglomeration of over 18 non-governmental organizations across the country whose objective is to advocate for the passage of the Land Rights Act.
