U.N. Countries Plan to Eliminate AIDS by 2030
By Stephen N. Sonpon, LINA

MONROVIA, July 29 (LINA) - The United Nations General Assembly and representatives of its 194 countries have decided to end HIV-AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

According to UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe, the decision to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 was reached in June this year following a consultative meeting between the U.N. General Assembly and representatives of its 194 member states.

Director Sidibe’s disclosure was contained in a message delivered on his behalf by Dr. Djibril Diallo, UNAIDS Regional Support Team Director for West and Central Africa on Thursday at the West Africa Workshop on Post-Ebola Global Reforms held in Monrovia.

Sidibe noted that the experiences and lessons learned from the AIDS responses will feed the regional center with good practices such as community mobilization for health and real time monitoring of access to services.

The UNAIDS official the decision also covers Tuberculosis and Malaria elimination programs that are in line with the African Union Catalytic Framework to end AIDS, TB and Malaria in Africa by 2030 and is also aligned with the African Union Agenda 2063.
