Ganta Mayor Wants Governance Act Passed

By Ballah M. Kollie, LINA

MONROVIA, July 23 (LINA) - The Mayor of Ganta City, Benjiman Tokpah, is calling for the speedy passage of the new Governance Act currently before the National Legislature.

He described as crucial the passage of a law that will set the standard for a city rather than what a city is currently considered to be.

“We are calling on our legislature to pass the new governance act,” Tokpah emphasized.

The Ganta City Mayor described as totally unacceptable and a fallacy for underdeveloped Liberia to have 141 cities, adding, “It is not possible.”

He stressed that it was unreal that Liberia will have this number of cities to which government is constrained to lend support.

Tokpah said reducing the number of cities for government to adequately fund them is the prudent thing to do as businesses will not be able to fund the entire operations of  cities.

“Unless government takes the necessary measure to reduce the huge number of cities in the country, it will not fund them adequately, thus leaving businesses with the burden of supporting them through municipal taxes.
