Three Counties To Get USAID-Funded Rice Mills - Rosner
By Ballah M. Kollie, LINA

MONROVIA, July 19 (LINA) – Three counties are to benefit from rice threshing, drying and milling facilities, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Food and Enterprise Development (FED) Chief of Party, Lee Rosner, has disclosed.

He said the three core agriculture counties of Bong, Nimba and Lofa are the beneficiaries.

Rosner said with few months to the entity’s December 2016 closure, USAID-FED is also constructing nine new rice hubs, three in each of the same counties.

He told the Liberia News Agency in an interview Monday that the facilities which are under construction will be fully operational by July 30 and that they will complement the ten others that are fully functional in the counties.

USAID-FED is a five-year US$75 million project of the U.S. Government being implemented in several African countries.

The project, which began in September 2011, is primarily focused on four value chains - rice production, cassava, vegetables and goat raising.

Rosner noted that FED has also upgraded the libraries at the Centers of Excellence where the National Diploma in Agriculture program will be taught.

The National Diploma in Agriculture program is a two-year imitative of USAID-FED to enhance the teaching of agriculture at four community colleges and the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Kakata City, Margibi County.

According to Chief of Party Rosner, FED has also made efforts towards sustaining the entity’s program after its departure, adding, “Liberia will be a more food-secure country as a result our program.”

He noted that FED is supporting the Ministry of Agriculture to advance the harmonization of three ECOWAS regulations from a policy stage to draft legislation that has been presented to the Land Reform Commission.
