Bain-Garr DEO Threatens To Shut 21 Schools
By S. Kannay Ziamo, LINA Ganta, Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, July 13 (LINA) - Twenty-one of the 100 schools within the Bain-Garr District School System in Ganta, Nimba County may not operate during the 2016/2017 academic year due to the “total refusal” of their administrations to comply with guidelines prescribed by the Education Ministry.

The guidelines require all schools to employ qualified teachers, provide a student-friendly environment, playgrounds, fenced-in school facilities and avoid congested classrooms, among others, according to Bain-Garr Education Officer, J. Lynnon Martor.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency Tuesday, Martor identified the category of schools to be affected as kindergarten, elementary, junior and senior high schools as well as daycare centers.

According to him, administrators and owners of those institutions have been notified to improve their school facilities, but to no avail.

Martor stressed that his action is in no way an attempt to reduce the number of schools operating in the district, but to ensure strict adherence to government's regulation aimed at strengthening Liberia's education sector.

The Bain-Garr District Officer noted that until all the necessary measures are put in place by those schools they will not be allowed to operate in the area during the 206/17 academic year.

Bain-Garr Education District has a total of 100 schools, 13 of which are full high schools, four semi-high schools, while the remaining 83 are elementary, kindergarten and daycare schools.
