Pres. Sirleaf Hails São Tomé and Principe On Anniversary
MONROVIA, July 11 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has sent a message of congratulations to the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe on the occasion commemorating the 41st Independence Anniversary of that country on July 12.
July 12 is celebrated annually as the Independence Anniversary of São Tomé and Principe after achieving its Independence from Portugal in 1975.
In the late 1950s, when other emerging nations across the African Continent were demanding independence, a small group of São Toméans formed the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe (MLSTP), which eventually established its base in nearby Gabon.
Picking up momentum in the 1960s, events moved quickly after the overthrow of the Caetano dictatorship in Portugal in April 1974.
The new Portuguese regime was committed to the dissolution of its overseas colonies – in November 1974, their representatives met with the MLSTP in Algiers and worked out an agreement for the transfer of sovereignty to the two island nation, the second smallest country in Africa.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, in her message to Mr. Manuel Pinto da Costa, President Sirleaf extended warmest congratulations to the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe, on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia and in her own name.
The Liberian leader entertained the hope that both countries will continue to collaborate bilaterally for the promotion of international peace, economic integration and social development.
She assured the Government of São Tomé and Principe of Liberia’s determination to continue to strengthen the cordial relations subsisting between the two countries for the mutual benefit of their respective peoples.
President Sirleaf then prayed that the Almighty God continue to endow His Excellency Mr. Manuel Pinto da Costa with wisdom as he leads his people on the path to peace and economic prosperity.
