GBARNGA, July 10 (LINA) - Information Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe has been overwhelmingly elected as the new National Secretary General of the governing Unity Party (UP).
Minister Nagbe defeated Representative Henry Fahnbulleh and Mr. Miller Katacaw with 251 votes to clinch the SG position. Katacaw got 77 votes ahead of Fahnbulleh who accumulated 68 of the total ballots cast.
Minister Nagbe was elected Friday night at the Unity Party National Convention in Gbarnga, Bong County.
Speaking to the Liberia News Agency Saturday, some UP partisans said they have explicit confidence in the ability of Minister Nagbe to bring the needed transformation that would ensure a more united and robust Unity Party before and after the 2017 elections.
"Our party needs a reconciler who will heal the wounds and further strengthen our unity in diversity as we prepare our party for the political task in 2017," the UP partisans emphasized.
They explained that with the wealth of experience the MICAT boss brings to the UP, they have no doubt that he would closely work with everyone in the party to better prepare it for service to the Liberian people before and after the 2017 elections.
Meanwhile, as of press time, elections for several other positions, including the national youth and women wings of the party are in progress at the convention in Gbarnga and results are expected soon.
Earlier, Vice President Joseph N. Boakai was elected on white ballot as Standard Bearer of the party along with outgoing National Secretary General, Wilmot Paye, who becomes the new National Chairman succeeding Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney G. Sherman.
