Supreme Court Reinstates Stay Order On Lower House

By Ballah M. Kollie, LINA

MONROVIA, June 21 (LINA) - The Supreme Court has reinstated a stay order and instituted a return to status quo ante of a June 2 motion suspending roll calls at the House of Representatives.

Roll call is a determinant for the attainment of quorum based on which discussions are held

But on June 2, Bong County Representative George Mulbah raised a motion for no roll call for one month from June 2 to July 2, which was sustained by House Speaker Alex Tyler, but opposed by Montserrado District Six Representative Edwin Snowe, who took exception and sought recourse at the Supreme Court.

With the petition for a prohibition on the June 2 decision, the high court recommended to Speaker Tyler and members of the House of Representative to in two sessions resolve the matter or it would rule on the petition, prompting its decision Tuesday for a return to status quo ante pending hearing of the petition.

The reinstatement of the stay order means regular roll calls will be held until the outcome of the petition for a prohibition of the no roll call decision.

The Supreme Court decision follows Speaker Tyler’s appearance before the full bench of the court on Tuesday in Monrovia.

Representative Snowe filed the petition on Thursday June 9.

Earlier, the court in a communication to Speaker Tyler, requested him to appear before it on the petition to show cause why the petitioner’s petition should not be granted.
