DEA, LNP Raid ‘Criminal’ Hideouts In Saclepea
By Wellington G. Patrick, Sanniquellie, Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, June 19 (LNA) - The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Nimba detachment has raided ‘criminal hideouts’ in Saclepea, central Nimba County and seized 50kg of marijuana from suspected gangs.

The raid was carried out in conjunction with officers of the Liberian National Police early last week, according to Nimba DEA Commander Col. Julius Karnubah.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency via mobile phone recently, Karnubah said 11 suspected drug dealers and consumers were arrested during the ensuing search.

Karnubah said most of the criminals lived in a booth they constructed at the “weil”, a river on the outskirts of that rural city, from where they intimidated peaceful passersby and stole from residents in the area.

The raid was in response to numerous complaints by residents of the area
who claimed that drug addicts were harassing peaceful citizens, Karnubah disclosed.

The DEA local head revealed that the 11 persons arrested were later convicted by the Saclepea Magisterial Court and sentenced to one year in prison each.
