Agric Official Stresses Joint Efforts To Implement VGGT
By Calvin Brooks, LINA

MONROVIA, June 13 (LINA) -Deputy Agriculture Minister Zizi Subah has stressed the need for collective efforts to implement the Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT) of land, fisheries and forestry in Liberia.

Subah stated that the VGGT will also focus on the fishery sector to ensure that the coastal areas in nine counties are protected and benefit from the use of the sea by foreign vessels.

He made the statement Monday at the start of a two-day seminar for stakeholders in the land, fishery and forestry sectors held under the theme: “Establishment of the VGGT Governance and Institutional Framework to facilitate VGGT Implementation” at Monrovia City Hall.

The seminar organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, brought together more than 50 participants.

He noted that government alone cannot patrol the sea and that those living around the coastal areas should inform authorities such as the Bureau of Fishery about foreign vessels operating in Liberian waters.

He explained that the VGGT calls for collective ownership to ensure that all stakeholders play their respective roles in terms of development in the land, fisheries and forestry sectors.

Subah emphasized that Liberians should seek development activities in these sectors through protection and management for the next generation.
