Cape Mount To Get New Prison Compound
By D. Ignatius Roberts, LINA Grand Cape Mount County Correspondent
ROBERTSPORT, June 9 (LINA) - Grand Cape Mount County Attorney Harris Mowoah has disclosed that construction of a new prison compound is underway in Tosor, Commonwealth District, Grand Cape Mount County.
Making the disclosure to the Liberia News Agency in Robertsport recently, Attorney Mowoah said the project is being implemented by the U.N. Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) under its quick impact project in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Government of Liberia.
According to Mowoah, the original Robertsport prison compound was destroyed during the civil crisis, prompting the county administration to use the former compound of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) as a prison, which, he noted, is not conducive for inmates.
He explained that the current prison compound which is supposed to hold 15 inmates, sometimes accommodates over 30 inmates, leading to overcrowding.
The Grand Cape Mount Attorney pointed out that the construction of the new prison center will reduce the problem of overcrowding at the current center.
