Pres. Sirleaf promises to sign petroleum law

By Prince Nagbe

MONROVIA, March 11 (LINA) – President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said she is prepared to sign into law a Petroleum Act that will set Liberia on course.

She made the statement at the start of the Monrovia Roundtables on the Petroleum Act of 2014, held at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville on Monday, according to the Liberia News Agency.

President Sirleaf said she believes that the Monrovia Roundtables on the Petroleum Act is arguably the most important national discussion, since those leading to the peace talks that ended over a decade of civil conflict in the country.

She said the discussion is crucial to the well-being of all stakeholders in the country, “because the way we use our petroleum resources matters for all of us, our children, and especially for our children’s children, and as such there is no turning back.”

President Sirleaf said she acknowledges the cooperation of the Legislature in helping to move things along in this national process.

The Chief Executive said her expectation is that the process reaches a successful conclusion, that will result to a petroleum law that both the Legislature and the Executive will sign with confidence and enthusiasm.

The Liberian leader said from the feedback that has been received from some of Liberia’s international partners, it is possible that Liberia will emerge as having the best, and most comprehensive petroleum law on the continent of Africa and the developing world.

President Sirleaf said a world-class petroleum law is an important part of lifting the resource curse that has plagued too many countries, including Liberia.

She said such a law “will protect our people and our environment, ensure openness, participation, consultation, and informed debate that will allow Liberia to continue to attract only the best oil companies from around the world.”
