Bain-Garr District To Get 20 Hand Pumps
By S. Kannay Ziamo, Ganta, Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, June 1 (LINA) - Citizens of Electoral District #1 in Nimba County have unanimously agreed to use US$70,000 allotted to the district for development purposes to construct 20 hand pumps in each of thezones that make up the electoral district #1 in Bain-Garr.

The citizens took the decision over the weekend in Ganta at a development town hall meeting organized by the district's lawmaker Jeremiah Koung following a call from a concerned citizen to elders and stakeholders of the district to put a halt to a school fencing project earlier suggested by Representative Koung.

The citizen's call was predicated upon the fact that the Lawmaker does not consult his people before using money allotted for the development of the district.

During the town hall meeting, citizens were given the opportunity to choose which development project their money should be used on.

Following hours of brainstorming, some citizens suggested that the US$70,000 be used to start the Gompa City Hall project, while others suggested that the money be directed to the installation of hand pumps in each of the 20 zones that make up the district.

Based on the two suggestions, the issue was put to a vote, during which over 80 percent of those in attendance voted in favor of the construction of hand pumps.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, Representative Koung said the decision of the people is final and must be respected.

"My people have decided that they need safe drinking water and as a servant of the people, I must obey their decision," added Koung.

He assured his citizens of the timely execution of the project.
