Firestone Promises Continuity With Sherman Law Firm

By Richard D. Baysah, LINA Margibi County Correspondent

KAKATA, May 29 (LINA) – The Firestone rubber company in Harbel, Margibi County has pledged to continue retaining the services of the Sherman & Sherman Law Firm in Monrovia amid reports of its Legal Counsel, Cllr.Varney Sherman, being entangled in an alleged bribery web.

It will be recalled that Sherman, along with some former and current government officials, is named in a London-based Global Witness report alleging a US$958,000.00 bribery scandal with Sable Mining Company between 2010 and 2011.

Sherman was arrested by the Criminal Court “C” at the Temple of Justice on Wednesday, May 25, but was later temporarily released after posting a US$1.5 million surety bond at the court.

In a statement, dated May 25 and released exclusively to the Liberia News Agency recently, the Public Relations Manager of Firestone, Rufus Karmorh, said Sherman and his law firm have served as legal counsel to the company on several matters during their long presence in Liberia.

“Throughout this time, Firestone has had no knowledge of any ethical or legal concerns with their services to us or any of the firm’s other clients,” the statement said.

“We are aware of the allegations in the Global Witness report and will monitor the progress of the ongoing investigations,” it added.

The statement indicated that in the wake of the allegations, the management is expressing its continuation of business with the Sherman & Sherman Law Firm.
