BUCHANAN, April 18 (LINA) - Grand Bassa County District #1 Representative and Deputy House Speaker Hans Barchue and residents of the district have embarked on a six-mile road project linking over 10 communities in five towns to the Buchanan Highway.
The self-help initiative that started last year is geared towards easing the transportation problem residents of Chauvenekon, Gaye-you-bueh, Kleh-weah, Garneo and Johnny Nathan Towns in Doewein Clan are confronted with, according to the head of the project, Magistrate Winston Dayougar.
Dayougar told the Liberia News Agency over the weekend that the residents are using cutlasses, diggers and axes to undertake the project which is expected to be completed before the rainy season.
He said they depend on cane juice, cassava and kiss meat for their livelihood, and that due to the lack of a good road, residents were making the sacrifice to get their produce to markets to remove the economic constraints they face owing to lack of road.
"Sometimes NGOS want to help us but how will they come in? No road, so we decided to help ourselves to build this road," Dayougar explained, adding that they are nearing Chuavenekon Town, the target earmarked by the residents.
He then called on the leadership of the county, local and international partners, NGOs, companies and well-meaning citizens to assist them in their endeavor.
