Pres. Sirleaf Dedicates Modern Buchanan City Hall

By Onesimus S. Garway, LINA Grand Bassa County Intern Correspondent

BUCHANAN, April 4 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson has dedicated a state-of-the-art City Hall in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County value at a little of US$295,000.

The City Hall is the first since the establishment of Buchanan City in 1833.

The Buchanan City Cooperation (BCC) has over the years used a little office at Unification Pavilion as its office.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony in Buchanan at the weekend, President Sirleaf described Buchanan City Mayor Julia Bono as a dedicated, trusted and committed public servant and called on other local officials to emulate her good example.

Giving an overview of the project, Mayor Bono said the US$295,000 project was made successful through the support of UMARCO, a shipping company operating in Buchanan, prominent leaders, citizens and business entities in the city.

Madam Bono added that the City Hall was constructed by the “Fair Play Construction Business Services”, a local construction company operating in the county.

The program brought together key officials of the government and the county’s authorities, including Deputy Speaker Hans Barchue, Deputy Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf, Chairman of the Bassa Council of Elders, Rev. Dr. Abba Karngar; the Bassa Legislative Caucus, Liberian Council of Chiefs and Elders and civil society actors, among others.

Presenting the key to Mayor Bono, the Chief Executive Officer of the construction company challenged the Liberian government to begin trusting local construction companies as a means of empowering Liberians.

Matthew Joe noted that despite the challenges some local construction companies gave the government in terms of completing projects, many of the companies are now prepared to prove integrity, transparency and accountability when the opportunity afforded them.
