YMCA Zorzor Branch Launches Anti-Violence Campaign

VOINJAMA, March 17 (LINA) -The Zorzor branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) has launched an anti-violence campaign in Zorzor City, Lofa County.

During the launch which began with a parade through the main streets of Zorzor City, over 200 students from 10 schools in Zorzor District carried posters calling on residents to denounce violence.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency, the Coordinator for the YMCA Zorzor branch, Eric Wesseh, said the launch of the campaign is part of a five-year project with the theme: “Securing Health, Lives and Sustainable Livelihoods for Vulnerable Young People.”

Wesseh disclosed that the project comprises three components - livelihoods, governance and health.

He explained that the project has also established peace and health clubs in 10 schools in the district as part of the health component, while the anti-violence campaign is part of the governance component.

According to Wesseh, 87 young people are currently undergoing training in tailoring, soap making, hair dressing, carpentry and auto mechanics, among others, as part of the livelihoods component, and that they are expected to graduate at the end of March.

Wesseh said the project began in 2013 is expected to end in 2017 and is being sponsored by Y-Care International with funding from the United Kingdom Agency for International Development (UKAID).

The anti-violence campaign launched during the weekend in Zorzor city was climaxed by quizzing and sporting activities among the 10 schools.
