Police Confirm Arrest Of Six Protesters
By Prince Nagbe

MONROVIA, March 7 (LINA) - The Liberia National Police (LNP) has confirmed that it has arrested six protesters who are undergoing investigation at its headquarters in Monrovia.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency via mobile phone, police spokesman Sam Collins said the six protesters were arrested on Friday in front of the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL).

According to Mr. Collins, findings of the investigation will be released to the public upon completion of the exercise.

Early Friday morning, hundreds of protesters converged in front of the CBL, carrying a casket and placards calling on the Bank’s Governor, Dr. Mills Jones, to resign his post.

Collins said the Police Support Unit (PSU) quickly rushed to the scene and dislodged the growing number of protesters, during which the six
people were arrested.

Tension has been brewing mainly in Monrovia since the passage of an amendment to the Act creating the CBL, by both Houses of the Legislature, forbidding the Governor and members of the CBL Board from contesting elected posts while in office.

The Act stipulates that for these CBL officials to participate in politics they must resign their posts three years to the election.
