Senate Rejects Request For Further Probe Into Greaves’ Death
By Wilfred Gortor, LINA

MONROVIA, March 1 (LINA) – The Liberian Senate on Tuesday rejected calls by Bong County Senator Jewel Howard Taylor for an independent Senate committee to investigate the death of Mr. Harry Greaves.

In a communication addressed to Senate President Pro-Tempore Armah Jallah on Tuesday, Taylor requested that the Senate Committee on Defense, Intelligence and Security lead a probe with authorities of the JFK Memorial Hospital to authenticate the cause of and circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Greaves.

Among other things, Taylor noted that her request was predicated upon the fact that the body of Greaves, who was former Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), was initially inspected at the JFK.

However, Grand Gedeh County Senator Alphonso Gaye, in a subsequent motion following the reading of Taylor’s communication, noted that the Senate should receive the letter and forward it to its Committee on Defense, Intelligence and Security for onward committee-room deliberation.

Gaye noted that his motion was filed on grounds that the Government of Liberia is currently leading an investigation, and that further discussion of the issue in open plenary by the Liberian Senate will prejudice the investigation.

Gaye’s motion was then accepted by the Senate plenary and the appropriate committees were requested to take charge of the matter and duly inform the Senate plenary in two weeks.
