Bassa Council Of Elders Hold First Meeting

By Johnson Liway, Grand Bassa County Correspondent

BUCHANAN, March 6 (LINA) – The Resilient Council of Elders of Grand Bassa County has convened for the first time at the BAWODA House, Fair Grounds in Buchanan City.

The meeting held under the theme: “Our Agenda is Grand Bassa County” and will among other things seek to find a road-map to reconciliation, unity and peace among Grand Bassa County citizens.

Speaking at the meeting, Rev. Dr. Abba G. Karnga, Chairman of the Council, reminded citizens and stakeholders to be tolerant of their leaders.

Also in remarks at the program on Sunday, Mr. Andrew Dehpoe Vah, Protocol and Political Officer to Superintendent Etweda Cooper, highlighted the disunity that has prevailed among Bassa citizens over the years.

Mr. Vah told the gathering that “what is disheartening is that the so-called misunderstanding and disunity is not even among the people and their leaders, but rather among the leaders themselves, which is spilling into the communities gradually in various shapes and forms.”

Vah emphasized that disunity remains a colossal challenge confronting Grand Bassa County and needs to be resolved fast.

He said this division is demonstrated through public insults on radio phone-in programs, the Internet, at public forums, among others, something he described as uncivilized and must be discouraged.

Vah observed that one of the causes of the disunity is elitism among leaders who forget their responsibilities to their people and county, noting that this attitude could serve as a catalyst for confusion, disunity, poor governance and other ills.
