CARI, FAO Begin Livestock Training In Bong
By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, February 24 (LINA) -A week-long livestock survey and characterization training has commenced at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) in Suakoko District, Bong County.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) at the opening of the training Monday, the head of the Livestock Department at CARI, Dr. Arthur Bob Karnuah, said the training will give an understanding of the genetic resources in the country relative to the four species of beef-cattle, goat, sheep and pigs.

Dr. Karnuah noted that the enumerators, who are currently conducting the training, will be deployed in the 15 counties to report basic available information on the four species from the counties.

He added that such information would be very essential because the population of the species in each county and the country at large will be known.

CARI Director General Dr. Walter Wiles encouraged the participants to take advantage of the training to improve the country’s animal production capacity.

He explained that Liberia can minimize the importation of beef cattle with their involvement in beef-cattle production.

The CARI Director General said the institute was currently on the brink of becoming better than its pre-war status.

The training, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), brought together over 40 participants from the 15 counties of Liberia.
