Nimba Lawmaker Proposes Name Changes
By S. Kannay Ziamo, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

GANTA, February 18 (LINA) - A Nimba County lawmaker has proposed the change of names of some major facilities, places and tribes in the county.

Representative Larry P. Younquoi said the changes will reflect that they truly belong to Nimba County.

Representative Younquoi advanced the proposal in the county during the County Council Sitting held in Sanniquillie City recently.

According to the lawmaker, it is not wise to give other tribal names to things that purely belong to Nimba.

He named the county capital city Sanniquillie, the commercial capital Ganta and Tappita city as names that should be changed to the names of tribes belonging to Nimba County.

He also named Radio Kergheamahn, the Kumasi Sport pitch in Ganta as names of public facilities that should be changed to names from the county.

For the tribes, he observed that it sounds insulting to say "Gio and Mano people."

The District # 8 lawmaker said it would sound better to say "the Dan people" when referring to the Gio people and "the Mahn people" when referring to the Mano people.

"Are we proud to be called Gio and Mano people? Are we happy to have our cities named Ganta, Sanniquillie and Tappita? This is a serious concern our people in America and other place are raising and we thought to bring it to you for your input,” Younquoi told the gathering.

He said, if it meets the consent of the people of Nimba, he will exert every effort to push for the necessary changes that will truly represent the county and its people.
