Gold Firm Assures Safety After Chemical Spill
By Philip T. Singbah, LINA Bong County Correspondent

GBARNGA, February 18 (LINA) -The Management of MNG Gold has pledged to continue to ensure that Bacon Town is safe for residents following a Tuesday morning accident that resulted to the spillage of chemical in the town.

MNG Gold is a mining company extracting gold from Kokoyah Statutory District in Bong County.

A vehicle belonging to the West African Transport Company hired by MNG Gold to carry HCL acid for use in its concession plant had an accident in Barcon Town, resulting to a spill of the chemical in the town.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency in Gbarnga Thursday, two officials of the company, Ben Sayeh and Duke Johnson said the area where the accident occurred has been neutralized, and assured that the company will continue to monitor the environment to ensure that it is safe for residents.

Messrs. Sayeh and Johnson told LINA that the initial bio- indicator report conducted in the town suggests that the situation has posed no danger so far because all creatures in the water are still alive.

Meanwhile, the two MNG Gold officials have called on residents of Barcon Town to report any health problem in the area and avoid drinking water in the town for now.

They said the Environmental Protection Agency has been informed about the situation and was closely working with the company to ensure that it is controlled.

The MNG Gold officials assured the people of Kokoyah that the company will continue to work with them and that it has no intention to undermine their well-being.
