Nimba Tops Fake Drugs Circulation
By Wellington G. Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, January 29 (LINA) -The Chief Pharmacist of the Nimba County Health System, Fon-Oli Zansi, has alarmed that the county currently ranks first among populated counties in Liberia with fake pharmaceutical drugs.

The report is part of the Liberia Medicines Product Regulatory Authority (LMPRA) Survey of 2015 intended to monitor the quality of medicines on the Liberian market.

According to Zansi, the survey conducted in the five most populated counties of Montserrado, Margibi, Bomi, Bong, and Nimba , shows that Nimba tops the statistics with 33 percent of counterfeit medicines.

As discovered by the National Drug Regulatory Authority, fake drugs in the county range from oral contraceptives, syrups, penicillin to doxcycline, among others.

In an interview with the Liberia News Agency in Sanniquellie Friday, Zansi called on stakeholders, including the Drug Enforcement Agency, Liberia National Police and the Superintendent of Nimba to institute surveillance to control the import and sale of fake drugs in the county.

“If serious measures are not instituted promptly, the lives of innocent citizens will be endangered,” Zansi warned.
