Tyler Commits Legislative Support To SDGs

By Prince S. Nagbe, LINA

MONROVIA, January 27 (LINA) – House Speaker Alex Tyler has said the role of the Legislature is crucial in the attainment of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), positioning the body to work with all stakeholders in ensuring its success.

Making the commitment at the official National Launch of the domestication of the 2030 Vision for Sustainable Development at the Monrovia City Hall on Tuesday, the Speaker noted that the Legislature will ask the necessary questions and make the required interventions for its fulfillment.

“If it means that we initiate necessary policies, legislations or assign the necessary oversight committees with other stakeholders, we stand ready to do so,” Speaker Tyler stressed.

He disclosed that the Legislature has already put into place basic mechanisms to monitor implementation activities and process of the SDGs, stressing, “These must be void of politics.”

The Speaker called on implementers of the SDGs to ensure that they get citizens informed about the issues and the implementation mechanisms, as well as develop a work or action plan if the 17 goals of the SDGs are to be achieved.

He also called on members of the Legislature that will be assigned oversight functions to be vigilant in their monitoring and evaluation of outcomes as the launch of the SDGs in Liberia marks a historical milestone in its existence.
