Pres. Sirleaf Wants Local SDGs Progress Measured
By Prince S. Nagbe, LINA

MONROVIA, January 26 (LINA) - President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is calling for mechanisms to ensure that Liberia’s progress in fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is properly measured.

According to the Liberian leader, doing so will ensure conformity with the global measurement through the setting up of global institutions to measure the progress and processes of member states.

President Sirleaf made the call Tuesday in her statement at the National Launch of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the Monrovia City Hall.

She disclosed that institutions are also being set up to monitor financing to make sure that those who have more capacity to support do their fair share as well as those who receive funds to take equal responsibilities for their own development.

The Liberian Chief Executive told delegates at the program that Liberia’s main target to achieve the 17 goals of the SDGs is “Leave No One Behind”, and urged Liberians to get involved in the process.

“We want to make sure that when we reach the next edge of the SDGs we can proudly say we have eradicated poverty at a considerate level,” she said.

Meanwhile, President Sirleaf has lauded House Speaker Alex J. Tyler for committing the Legislature’s support to the national effort to ensure that Liberia domesticates the SDGs and sets up the mechanisms and the procedures for its successful implementation.
