Nimba Citizens Want Energy Sector Privatized
By Wellington G Patrick, LINA Nimba County Correspondent

SANNIQUELLIE, October 19 (LINA) - Citizens of Nimba County have unanimously agreed to the privatization of the energy sector of the county.

The citizens reached the decision at a stakeholders forum held in Saclepea at the weekend where they voted to privatize the energy sector of the county.

The forum brought together over 100 participants, including Liberia Electricity Corporation Transmission and Distribution Consultant Thomas Goankeh.

In a resolution released at the end of the forum, the delegates observed that the energy sector of the region when transferred to private management would be cheaper and constant.

They also called on the county leadership to prioritize Liberians in the bidding process of the exercise.

In a related development, the head of the Concerned Women Organization of Nimba, Madam Musu Kardamie, is calling on the local authority to ensure the recruitment, training, and employment of young Nimbians during the entire exercise.

Kardamie noted that if the private sector works with the locals it will not only boost the energy sector, but also reduce the high unemployment in the county which, she noted, has remained a serious challenge for the youth of the county.

Business owners and residents of Nimba subscribing to the Liberia Electricity Cooperation (LEC) are complaining about the irregularity in the supply of electricity.

Nimba County for the past year has been receiving electricity under an agreement between the Governments of Liberia and Ivory Coast through the West African Power Pool to supply electricity to Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Maryland and River Gee counties.
